The Port District Cricketers Club was established in 1988 under the banner of Port District Football Club Incorporated. Within two years the cricketers had achieved a grand final win in season 1990-91 season. It was quickly established then that we had some talent and that the cricket part of the club could be a success. Since then cricket has grown and offers another competition for the summer months. This keeps the clubrooms open and enjoyable all year round.
The club only offered senior cricket for many years under the South Australian Cricket Association (Adelaide Turf Cricket Association). In 2005 a junior Under 13 team was introduced under the Western Suburbs Cricket Association. This year we have nominated four senior teams, A3, B3, C3 and L.O.C., and five junior teams ranging from Under 11s to Under 17s. Port District cricket has certainly grown since its inception and the enthusiasm continues.
Over the past 21 years, many great cricketers have graced Largs Reserve and collectively these players and the committee have made the Port District Footballers Cricket Club very successful and respected. In the 1988/89 season, the club’s inaugural year, Fred Rigney captain/coached the cricket team. L Martin was the club’s first Cricketer of the Year and since then there have been another 13 players who have been awarded the honour as the club’s best cricketer. Andrew Barty and Glen Rosling both hold the record for winning three Cricketer of the Year awards. There are two players who have made more than 2000 club runs, Bernard Lappin and Mick Ruth. Two players have taken 200+ wickets for the club, Craig Walker and Glen Rosling.
The Port District Footballers Cricket Club would like to thank all players, coaches and support staff who have been involved over the past 25 years. Without the dedication and commitment of these people, we would not have reached this important milestone.
